21 RARE Photos From Walt Disney’s Personal Camera

By Keith Mahne

Not long ago, D23 staff visited the Walt Disney Archives to examine some extremely rare photographs sourced from rolls of film found in Walt Disney’s personal camera that were captured throughout his life. The photos we are about to see show candid moments from his travels and time spent with his family and friends. Join us today for a wonderful look at 21 rare photos from the camera that Walt always carried with him...

As the famous Walt quote goes for his idea for Disneyland,
"Well it came about when my daughters were very young and Saturdays were always daddy’s day with the two daughters. So we'd start out and try to go someplace different and things. I'd take them to the merry-go-round and I took em different places and as I'd sit there...I felt that there should be something built...where that the parents and the children could have fun together. So that's how Disneyland started..."
Below, we see a photo of one of those Saturdays with daddy as Walt's two girls visit the carousel at Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California. Was this one of those times Walt was thinking up Disneyland?

Even Walt's nephew Roy E. Disney would accompany his uncle’s family as evident in the photo below taken in the late 1930s...

Thank goodness that the D23 staff located these truly amazing treasures hidden in the Walt Disney Archives. As Disney Historian Jim Korkis once told me, there is still so much yet to be discovered in the archives being that a lot of it has yet to be organized and documented. Hopefully, sometime again soon, more of these spectacular treasures will come to light. Until that day comes, let's just enjoy these great shots taken with Walt's own camera and remember the great memories he had with his family. After all, these moments led to the most magical places on earth.
