Nothing says the 80s quite like shoulder padded jackets, the band Cheap Trick and neon font, all of which you would have found at Grad Nite 84'. What better way to celebrate the end of high school and the beginning of a new era in one's life than with a fun filled night at the Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland?! Let's travel back to Disneyland of the 80s and see what a Grad Nite at Disneyland was like with this "totally bangin'" 1984 pamphlet and program guide...
The first thing you'll need is your ticket to the fun...
The back of our ticket contains some of the appropriate dress code rules and items not allowed in Disneyland like "no alcoholic beverages, marijuana or dangerous drugs"...

This great student information pamphlet contained all the details for the evening. Things like a more detailed dress code, what bands were performing and when, and also, perhaps the most exciting detail, that the "new" Alice in Wonderland attraction was opening for Grad Nites...
Next up is the Disneyland Grad Nite ’84 program guide. The program featured an intentional blurred cover photo. Depending on who you ask, the blurriness was a good representation of the 80s and also of the teens who found creative ways to sneak in those "alcoholic beverages, marijuana or dangerous drugs" mentioned on the tickets. This happened often at Grad Nites and you can hear the late Jack Lindquist recount a few funny memories of this in my interview with him for the Disney Avenue Podcast by clicking HERE...
The program guide consisted of a great keepsake for guests who attended. It was filled with photos of recent Grad Nites, band photos of those that played for that years events, a signature page and place to put your Grad Nite photo and also a list of all the schools attending on June 13, 1984...

This is a great story! Adding to the fun was seeing my HS alma mater (Apple Valley HS)attending this particular night! My grad night was back in 1976 (I'm old, I know!). I think we must have been part of the reason there was a dress code. I don't remember there being one in '76 but, that was 41 years ago, so..
ReplyDeleteI attended in 1986(Palos Verdes High School) and it was awesome! Even though there were so many kids there, it felt like we had the park to ourselves. And honestly, being dressed up while going on all of the rides actually made us feel even cooler than we thought we were! lol I wish I had pictures but I think the only one I have somewhere is the formal one they took and gave as a souvenir. To this day, my kids are all jealous that they can't experience it. Such a great memory! Thanks for making me smile and think back to a great night!
